The Punjab Bandh on August 27 has drawn opposition from the Punjab Pradesh Vyapar Mandal, which has urged traders not to shut their shops in response to the call being circulated on social media. The traders’ body discussed the possible impact of the proposed shutdown during a meeting chaired by its president, Rakesh Gupta.
The organisation said repeated calls for statewide or city-level shutdowns by groups unrelated to the trading community can cause financial losses to shopkeepers. This time, traders are particularly concerned because August 27 coincides with the Raksha Bandhan festival, when markets generally see increased customer activity.
Traders Oppose August 27 Bandh Call
During the meeting, Rakesh Gupta said the Punjab Bandh on August 27 was being called without taking the trading community into confidence. According to him, traders often face difficulties when organisations from other sections of society announce shutdowns that have little direct connection with their businesses.
He said keeping shops closed during a major festival could result in significant losses for retailers and other local businesses. Raksha Bandhan is an important shopping occasion, with customers visiting markets for gifts, sweets, clothing, jewellery and other festive items.
‘Consult Traders Before Calling a Bandh’
Gupta said that any organisation planning a shutdown that affects businesses should first approach the traders’ body and discuss the matter. He maintained that a bandh affecting commercial establishments should not be announced without considering the interests of the business community.
He also appealed to traders not to close their establishments merely because of a call issued by another organisation. According to the traders’ body, many shopkeepers feel compelled to shut their businesses due to pressure or fear during such shutdowns.
Traders Raise Concern Over Business Losses
The traders’ organisation said frequent shutdown calls can particularly affect small shopkeepers and businesses that depend on daily sales. Even a single day of lost business can have a financial impact on retailers, especially during important festive periods.
The association therefore reiterated its opposition to the Punjab Bandh on August 27, saying the timing of the proposed shutdown could be especially damaging for traders because of Raksha Bandhan.
Raksha Bandhan Shopping Could Be Affected
The proposed Punjab Bandh on August 27 has also raised concerns about customers who plan to shop for Raksha Bandhan. Markets typically witness demand for rakhis, sweets, gifts, clothes and other festive products around the occasion.
The traders’ body believes that keeping shops closed on the festival could affect both businesses and consumers. It has therefore asked traders to follow the position of their own organisation rather than responding to shutdown calls issued without consultation.
Several Traders Attend Meeting
The meeting was attended by several members of the trading community, including Bharat Bhushan Kala, Balbir Chand Singla, Rajesh Gupta Meena, Krishna Kumar Varga, Jasvir Singh, Madan Goyal, Bhupinder Singh, Rajinder Verma, Mohan Lal, Ashok Garg, Rakesh Sharma, Gopal Sharma, Moti Lal Garg, Jaswinder Singh, Darshan Lal and Arun Bhardwaj, among others.
The traders discussed issues that could affect their businesses and reiterated their opposition to the Punjab Bandh on August 27. The association has appealed to traders to keep their establishments open and not act on any bandh call without the support or approval of the traders’ body.
For now, the traders’ organisation has made its position clear: it does not support the August 27 shutdown call and has asked the business community to prioritise normal commercial activity, particularly on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan.
