Delhi government plans 12-hour Atal Canteen at AIIMS Delhi to provide affordable meals for patients’ attendants, with DUSIB floating a ₹29.74 lakh tender for expansion.
The Delhi government is planning to establish a new Atal Canteen at AIIMS Delhi to provide affordable and continuous meal services for patients’ attendants and visitors. The proposed facility will operate for extended hours and is expected to significantly improve food accessibility for those spending long hours at the hospital.
Tender Floated for New Canteen Facility
According to officials, the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) has floated a tender worth approximately ₹29.74 lakh for the construction of the new Atal Canteen at AIIMS Delhi. The project is expected to be completed within 45 days once awarded.
The initiative is part of the government’s broader plan to expand the Atal Canteen at AIIMS Delhi model near major government hospitals across the capital.

12-Hour Continuous Service for Visitors
Unlike existing Atal Canteens that operate in fixed meal slots, the proposed Atal Canteen at AIIMS Delhi will function continuously for 12 hours, from 10 am to 10 pm. This change aims to ensure that patients’ families and attendants have access to food throughout the day.
Officials stated that the Atal Canteen at AIIMS Delhi will address the challenges faced by people who often remain at hospitals for extended periods without affordable food options.
Affordable Meals for Economically Weaker Sections
Under the Atal Canteen scheme, meals including chapati, rice, vegetable curry, and pickle are provided at just ₹5 per plate. The expansion of the Atal Canteen at AIIMS Delhi is expected to further strengthen the government’s efforts to ensure food security for economically weaker sections.
Each canteen currently serves up to 500 plates for lunch and 500 plates for dinner daily, and the Atal Canteen at AIIMS Delhi will follow a similar high-capacity model.
Part of Larger Expansion Plan
The Delhi government has allocated ₹104 crore for the Atal Canteen scheme, with plans to set up around 40 additional canteens near government hospitals. The upcoming Atal Canteen at AIIMS Delhi is a key part of this expansion strategy.
Officials noted that the Atal Canteen at AIIMS Delhi will help improve accessibility and ensure that no visitor or patient’s attendant goes without affordable meals.
