Delhi CM Rekha Gupta flags off 500 new electric buses on BJP govt’s first anniversary, boosting clean transport, reducing pollution, and expanding metro connectivity in the city.
In a major step towards sustainable urban transport, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday inaugurated 500 electric buses at Ramlila Maidan, marking the first anniversary of the BJP government’s return to power in the Capital after 27 years. The addition brings the total number of electric buses on Delhi city routes to 4,000, with plans to expand the fleet to approximately 14,000 by the end of 2028.
The newly launched buses, including three interstate routes to Panipat, are fully air-conditioned and equipped with CCTV cameras and panic buttons, ensuring both comfort and safety for passengers. “These buses will not only reduce traffic congestion but also contribute significantly to improving air quality in the city,” CM Gupta said during the event.
Delhi Metro Expansion and EV Policy Updates
Highlighting Delhi’s transportation growth, CM Gupta noted that the city currently operates a 400-km metro network across Delhi-NCR, which will expand to 500 km upon completion of Phase V. She also announced an upcoming policy to regularize electric rickshaws, further supporting the government’s push for a cleaner, greener city.

While reflecting on the past, CM Gupta criticized the previous AAP government, emphasizing that Delhi residents previously struggled to access basic amenities like clean water, proper sanitation, and healthcare. “Last year, the people of Delhi gave a clear message at this very ground of Ramlila Maidan, changing the city’s future for the better,” she said.
Political Reactions and Commitments
BJP state chief Nitin Nabin lauded the government for creating the largest electric bus fleet in India. “This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to zero tolerance for corruption, digital transparency, and accountable governance,” he said. The new e-bus fleet is expected to reduce pollution, ease traffic, and support Delhi’s long-term sustainability goals.
The launch of these electric buses not only reinforces the BJP government’s focus on eco-friendly public transport but also sets a benchmark for urban mobility initiatives across India.
