Delhi CM Rekha Gupta reviews onion and sugar prices, directs officials to prepare for price rises and consider NAFED supplies to protect consumers.

The Delhi government has stepped up its monitoring of essential commodities amid concerns over a possible rise in onion and sugar prices. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta chaired a review meeting to assess the availability, supply and market situation of onions and sugar across the national capital.

Officials informed the meeting that there is currently no shortage of either onion or sugar in Delhi. However, the government has decided to prepare in advance so that consumers do not face an additional financial burden if market prices increase further.

Government May Procure Onion and Sugar From NAFED

According to the Chief Minister’s Office, if onion and sugar prices rise significantly, the Delhi government may procure these commodities from the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Limited (NAFED).

The government plans to make the procured commodities available at different locations across Delhi. The objective is to improve accessibility for consumers and provide relief if retail prices come under pressure.

The commodities would be sold based on the prices at which they are procured from NAFED. The Delhi government would bear transportation and other related expenses so that these additional costs are not passed on to consumers.

Focus on Controlling Onion Supply and Hoarding

The Chief Minister has directed the Food and Supplies Department to closely monitor the supply of onions coming into Delhi. Officials have also been asked to ensure that the available stock reaches the market properly.

The department has been instructed to keep a check on hoarding and take appropriate action wherever necessary. The government believes that effective monitoring of supply channels can help prevent artificial shortages and keep onion and sugar prices from rising unnecessarily.

Cheap Onion Camps May Be Set Up Across Delhi

With the possibility of further price increases being taken into account, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has asked the department to prepare a detailed action plan.

One of the proposals under consideration is to arrange camps at different locations in Delhi where consumers could purchase onions at relatively affordable rates. Such an arrangement could be activated if market prices rise substantially.

Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said the government wants to ensure that Delhi residents do not face an additional burden if onion prices increase. He said onions procured through NAFED could be supplied to consumers based on the procurement price, while transportation and other associated expenses would be borne by the Delhi government.

Strict Action Planned Against Sugar Hoarding

The government is also focusing on the availability and storage of sugar. During the meeting, the Food and Supplies Minister pointed out that the central government has prescribed quantity-related rules to prevent excessive stocking and hoarding of sugar.

The Delhi government will take action under the applicable rules if sugar is found stored beyond the permitted limit at any location. Officials have also been asked to examine ways to make sugar available to consumers at reasonable prices.

A separate detailed plan is expected to be prepared to strengthen the supply system and ensure that consumers can access sugar without facing unnecessary price pressure.

Government Preparing Before Any Major Price Rise

The review meeting indicates that the Delhi government is taking preventive measures rather than waiting for a shortage or sharp price increase to develop. At present, officials have reported adequate availability of onions and sugar in the capital.

However, if onion and sugar prices rise in the coming days, the government may use NAFED supplies, absorb transportation-related expenses and explore direct distribution through designated locations and camps.

The administration has also emphasized monitoring market supplies and preventing hoarding. The detailed action plan being prepared by the department is expected to outline measures for maintaining stable availability and protecting consumers from a sudden increase in onion and sugar prices.
