Sugar prices in Haryana have jumped nearly 45% ahead of the festive season, rising to ₹62-65 per kg and putting pressure on household budgets.
Haryana consumers may have to spend significantly more on sweets and daily household essentials ahead of the upcoming festive and wedding season, with sugar prices in Haryana witnessing a sharp rise over the past one-and-a-half months.
Retail prices that were earlier around ₹42-₹45 per kg have now climbed to nearly ₹62-₹65 per kg in several markets. The increase has raised concerns among households, tea sellers, sweet shops and other businesses that depend heavily on sugar.
Sugar Prices in Haryana Surge by Nearly 45%
According to traders and industry sources, sugar prices in Haryana have increased by nearly 45% within roughly six weeks. The sudden rise comes at a time when demand traditionally increases because of festivals, weddings and celebrations.
For ordinary households, the price increase means a higher monthly grocery bill. The impact could become more noticeable during the festive period when the consumption of sweets, tea and other sugar-based products rises substantially.
Why Are Sugar Prices Rising?
Traders and industry experts have attributed the increase to several factors affecting sugar production and supply.
Adverse weather and rainfall conditions have reportedly affected sugarcane production in some areas. At the same time, a significant portion of sugarcane and its by-products is being diverted towards ethanol production. Industry sources estimate that around 33% is being utilised for ethanol-related purposes, which has reduced the quantity available for sugar production.
Another concern is the declining area under sugarcane cultivation. Farmers are reportedly considering alternative crops because of the lengthy sugarcane crop cycle and concerns related to delayed payments. A reduction in sugarcane acreage can eventually affect the availability of raw material for sugar mills.
These factors have contributed to tighter supply conditions and added pressure on sugar prices in Haryana.
Government Has No Role in Price Rise, Says Ranbir Gangwa
Haryana Cabinet Minister Ranbir Singh Gangwa said the increase in sugar prices was a market-driven issue.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting of the Grievance Committee in Panipat, Gangwa said the government had no role in determining the current price increase. He described the situation as a result of fluctuations in demand and supply.
His statement comes amid growing concern among consumers and traders over the sharp movement in retail sugar prices.

Tea Shops, Hotels and Sweet Businesses Feel the Heat
The rise in sugar prices in Haryana is also putting pressure on businesses that use sugar as a key input.
Tea vendors are facing higher operating costs and some have already increased the price of tea. Hotels, restaurants and other food businesses are also keeping a close watch on input costs.
Sweet shop owners are particularly concerned because the festive and wedding season is approaching. Local sweet-shop associations have indicated that if the higher sugar costs continue, prices of sweets could rise by around ₹20 to ₹30 per kg.
For consumers, this could make traditional festive purchases more expensive at a time when household spending is already under pressure.
Could Sugar Reach ₹75 Per Kg?
Traders have expressed concern that sugar prices in Haryana could rise further if supplies do not improve quickly.
Some market participants have warned that retail prices could potentially move towards ₹75 per kg in the coming weeks if the supply situation remains tight and demand increases during the festive season.
However, the future price movement will depend on several factors, including sugar availability, mill production, market demand, weather conditions and government policy related to sugar and ethanol.
Festive Season Could Put Additional Pressure on Prices
The timing of the price increase has become a major concern for consumers. With festivals and weddings approaching, demand for sugar is expected to remain strong.
If supply does not improve alongside the increase in demand, sugar prices in Haryana could remain elevated, affecting not only household grocery budgets but also the cost of tea, sweets and food products.
For now, consumers and businesses are likely to keep a close watch on wholesale and retail markets as they prepare for the upcoming festive season.
