Heatwave in Delhi, New Delhi Lt. Governor calls for paid breaks for construction site workers
The Lt. Governor of Delhi V. K. Saxena instructed laborers on the construction sites to be given a paid break from noon to 3 pm in response to the heatwave in the city, the temperatures were noted to be around 50 degrees Celsius in several areas.
The LG has ordered to provide adequate water and coconut water to the workers at construction sites and has also instructed to keep water in pitchers at bus stands.
The Delhi Development Authority has implemented a three-hour break system for workers since May 20 and will continue to implement it at all locations until the temperature drops below 40 degrees Celsius, LG said.
They said he directed the chief secretary to immediately convene a meeting of officials of PWD, DJB, I&FC, MCD, NDMC, power department and DUSIB and issue necessary instructions to protect workers and managers from the effects of sweltering heat.
He also directed that clay pots for drinking water should be placed at bus shelters to provide relief to bus passengers and treated water tankers from sewage treatment plants should be used for irrigating roads to activate sprinklers installed on high-rise buildings and roads, to relieve stress on bus passengers.
