India tests Emergency Alert System sending loud beep alerts to millions of phones for disaster warning and public safety across the country.
India has taken a major step in strengthening its disaster response infrastructure by testing a Cell Broadcast Emergency Alert System across the country. On Saturday, millions of mobile users received a loud alert beep as part of a nationwide trial of the system, designed to deliver instant warnings during natural disasters.
Nationwide test of Emergency Alert System conducted
The government carried out a large-scale trial of the Emergency Alert System, sending test messages to almost all mobile users around 11:42 AM. The alert, accompanied by a loud sound on devices, was intended to verify the reach, speed, and reliability of the system.
Officials clarified that the alert was only a test and no action was required from the public.
What is the Emergency Alert System?
The newly launched Emergency Alert System is built on indigenous Cell Broadcast technology. It is designed to send real-time, geo-targeted disaster alerts directly to mobile phones without requiring internet access.
The system can deliver warnings related to floods, earthquakes, cyclones, and other emergencies. The Emergency Alert System ensures that citizens receive critical information instantly, even in high-network congestion situations.
Government message on the alert test
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) advised citizens not to panic upon receiving such messages. The Emergency Alert System test message clearly stated that it was part of system validation and no response was needed from users.
The alert message read that India has launched a Cell Broadcast system using indigenous technology to ensure timely disaster communication and public safety.

Role of NDMA and C-DOT in the system
The Emergency Alert System has been developed by the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Department of Telecommunications.
It is based on the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP), recommended by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The system is already operational across all 36 states and union territories in India.
Why the Emergency Alert is important
The Emergency Alert System plays a crucial role in saving lives during disasters by providing early warnings. It ensures that people in affected areas receive alerts in real time, allowing them to take immediate safety measures.
Authorities stated that the Emergency Alert System will significantly improve India’s disaster communication network and strengthen emergency preparedness nationwide.
Government assures safety and awareness
Minister of Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia also confirmed that the Emergency Alert will be used for future real-time alerts in multiple languages. He emphasized that citizen safety is the top priority of this initiative.
The DoT has requested public cooperation during the testing phase of the Emergency Alert , stating that repeated test messages are part of system calibration.
