Isudan Gadhvi urged government recognition, security, and lifetime financial support for journalists’ families, calling media professionals the soldiers of society.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Gujarat President Isudan Gadhvi has urged governments to provide stronger protection, official recognition, and financial security to journalists, describing them as the “soldiers of society” who courageously expose corruption and safeguard democracy.
Speaking at the National Day programme organised by the Bharatiya Patrakar Sanrakshan Samiti, Gadhvi said journalists perform a role similar to that of the armed forces by defending the interests of the nation and society without expecting personal gain.
“Journalists Protect Democracy Like Soldiers Protect Borders”
Addressing the gathering, Gadhvi said that while soldiers defend the country’s borders, journalists defend democracy by exposing corruption, criminal activities, and administrative failures.
He noted that many reporters continue to perform their duties despite facing intimidation, legal harassment, threats, and violence. According to him, journalists often risk their lives to ensure that the truth reaches the public.

Calls for Better Protection and Recognition
Recalling his own 16-year career in journalism, Gadhvi highlighted the financial hardships many media professionals face. He said that the families of journalists who lose their lives while performing their duties are frequently left without adequate financial support.
To address these concerns, he demanded:
Government recognition for journalists working across print, television, digital, YouTube, and social media platforms.
Strong legal and physical protection for journalists working under pressure or facing threats.
Measures to improve the economic security of media professionals.
A lifetime financial assistance package for the families of journalists who die while performing their professional responsibilities.
Need for Comprehensive Journalist Welfare Policy
Gadhvi stressed that journalism remains one of the most challenging professions because reporters often work under constant pressure while serving the public interest.
He said governments should formulate a comprehensive policy that recognises journalism as an essential public service and ensures that media professionals receive the respect, safety, and institutional support they deserve.
AAP Highlights Importance of Free and Fearless Journalism
According to Gadhvi, a healthy democracy depends on independent journalism. He said protecting journalists is not only about safeguarding individuals but also about preserving citizens’ right to receive accurate and unbiased information.
He urged policymakers to take meaningful steps toward journalist welfare, stating that those who dedicate their lives to informing society should never be left without security or support during times of crisis.
