Punjab Irrigation Revolution gains momentum as Bhagwant Mann government boosts canal coverage from 26.5% to 78%, delivering Bhakra-equivalent water to farms and benefiting over 1,400 villages.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Wednesday highlighted a major transformation in the state’s irrigation sector, stating that the government has successfully delivered water equivalent to the Bhakra canal to farmlands within just four years. He emphasized that this achievement marks a significant milestone under the Punjab Irrigation Revolution, aimed at strengthening agricultural infrastructure and water access.
Punjab Irrigation Revolution Drives Massive Expansion
Addressing a press conference, the Chief Minister revealed that canal irrigation coverage in Punjab has increased dramatically from 26.5% in 2022 to nearly 78% today. This sharp rise is being credited to the ongoing Punjab Irrigation Revolution, which has expanded water access to around 58 lakh acres of farmland.
He further noted that by tapping seasonal rivers and streams, the government has ensured an additional 10,000 cusecs of water supply—equivalent to creating a new Bhakra canal without acquiring any land.

Revival of Defunct Canals and Infrastructure Boost
A key highlight of the Punjab Irrigation Revolution is the revival of old and abandoned canal systems. The government has restored 101 canals spanning 545 km, many of which had been non-functional for over three decades.
One notable example is the Sarhali canal in Tarn Taran, a 22-km-long channel that had completely disappeared due to neglect. Today, it has been revived and is fully operational, benefiting farmers in the region.
Round-the-Clock Water Supply Ends Waiting System
The Chief Minister also announced the end of the traditional rotational water supply system. Under the Punjab Irrigation Revolution, farmers now receive 24×7 water supply through major channels like the Ferozepur-Sirhind feeder, eliminating long waiting periods for irrigation turns.
Additionally, key canals such as Sirhind and Ferozepur feeders have been upgraded, increasing their capacity significantly and ensuring better water distribution even in tail-end areas.
Historic Reach: Water to 1,446 Villages
In a landmark achievement, the government has ensured that 1,446 villages receive canal water for the first time since Independence. The revival of the Kandi Canal in Hoshiarpur has played a crucial role in this success, bringing relief to regions that had faced water scarcity for decades.
This milestone further strengthens the impact of the Punjab Irrigation Revolution, especially in previously underserved rural areas.
Investment, Sustainability, and Groundwater Conservation
The state government has invested ₹6,700 crore in canal infrastructure, including lining, modernization, and repairs. Alongside this, efforts under the Punjab Irrigation Revolution have reduced dependence on groundwater, with significant improvements recorded in districts like Gurdaspur.
The Chief Minister stressed that increased use of canal water will not only improve crop productivity but also help conserve groundwater for future generations.
