Prime Minister Narendra Modi praises West Bengal voters for high turnout in the second phase of Assembly elections, highlighting strong democratic participation and heavy polling across districts.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday expressed gratitude to voters in West Bengal for recording a high turnout in the second phase of the ongoing Assembly elections. Addressing a public gathering in Hardoi, he appreciated the enthusiasm of citizens who participated in large numbers despite the polling still being underway.
Referring to the voting trend, PM Modi said that the people of West Bengal had demonstrated strong awareness of their democratic rights. He urged voters to continue participating in the electoral process until polling concludes.
“I express my gratitude to the people of Bengal for coming out in large numbers to vote. Several hours of polling are still left, and I appeal to voters to maintain the same enthusiasm,” the Prime Minister said.
Highlighting reports of heavy polling, the Prime Minister noted that long queues were seen across several constituencies and that visuals of voter participation were widely shared on social media platforms. He described the current electoral environment in the state as one where citizens were voting “without fear,” calling it a reflection of a strengthening democracy.

According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), West Bengal recorded a voter turnout of 61.11% till 1 pm in the second phase of polling. District-wise data showed Hooghly leading with 64.57%, followed by Nadia at 61.41%, Howrah at 60.68%, Kolkata North at 60.18%, and Kolkata South at 57.73%.
The second phase of polling covers 142 Assembly constituencies out of a total 294 seats in the state. Around 3.21 crore voters are eligible to cast their votes, including more than 1.64 crore male voters, 1.57 crore female voters, and 792 transgender voters. A total of 1,448 candidates, including 220 women, are contesting the elections across 41,001 polling stations.
The political contest in this phase is primarily between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The TMC is seeking to retain its stronghold in South Bengal and Kolkata, while the BJP aims to expand its influence in urban regions and among key voter groups.
In the 2021 Assembly elections, the TMC had secured a dominant performance in this belt, winning 123 of the 142 seats now under polling. The current phase is being closely watched as a key indicator of voter sentiment in urban constituencies.
Political analysts describe this phase as crucial for both major parties, with the TMC aiming to strengthen its path toward a fourth consecutive term under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, while the BJP focuses on expanding its urban voter base.
