Delhi Weather : Heavy monsoon showers continue to lash several states across North and West India, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for East Rajasthan and Gujarat.
Delhi Weather: The forecast warns of heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated instances of extremely heavy downpours likely until Saturday, heightening the risk of flash floods and severe waterlogging. Intense rainfall has also been predicted for parts of West Rajasthan, Madhya Maharashtra, Konkan, and Goa.
Delhi: Yamuna above danger mark, flood-like situation
In the national capital, IMD has forecast light to moderate rain with thunderstorms through Saturday, with the possibility of a few heavy spells. Although no official alert has been issued, persistent showers over recent days have pushed the Yamuna River above the danger mark, creating flood-like conditions and traffic chaos.
Authorities have shut key roads, including the Loha Pul bridge, as a precautionary measure. On Friday, Delhi recorded a high of 33.2°C and a low of 24°C, both below the seasonal norm. Humidity remained high, fluctuating between 78% and 87%, worsening discomfort. Rainfall varied across the city, with Palam logging 13.3 mm and Safdarjung 7.6 mm.
Northern states suffer heavy toll, over 300 dead
In Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and Haryana, monsoon devastation continues with landslides, flash floods, and structural collapses claiming more than 300 lives so far. Several villages remain submerged, and blocked highways have crippled regional connectivity.
Punjab is among the hardest hit, with officials calling it one of the state’s worst floods in decades. As per government reports, 43 people have died, and standing crops over 1.71 lakh hectares have been damaged. Around 1,902 villages across 23 districts, impacting over 3.84 lakh residents, have been affected. Minister Hardeep Singh Mundian said economic losses amount to thousands of crores as farms and infrastructure lie devastated.
Rain forecast extended for North India
The IMD has projected continued rainfall for much of North India over the next three days. States including Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and both eastern and western Rajasthan are likely to receive moderate to heavy rainfall through September 10.
