National Human Rights Commission: In addition to charging him Rs 8,000, the hospital cancelled his Ayushman Bharat card.

National Human Rights Commission : The Haryana government and the state police chief have received a letter from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) regarding allegations that a patient at a Panipat hospital had surgery on his left knee rather than his right.

The NHRC noted in a statement released on Thursday that the patient was charged by the hospital even though they were eligible for the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), as per a media report.

The patient’s family reportedly objected, so the physicians operated right away on the other knee, but the patient is reportedly unable to walk as a result. According to the statement, the hospital demanded Rs 8,000 from him and cancelled his Ayushman Bharat card.

If the news report’s contents are accurate, the commission has noted, they raise severe concerns about “medical negligence causing violation of the victim’s rights to life and health.” As a result, it has sent notifications to the Haryana Chief Secretary and DGP requesting a thorough report in a week. It stated that information about the measures taken against the guilty and any compensation given to the sufferer should be included.

As stated by the NHRC, “The authorities who have neglected to carry out their duty to supervise and keep vigil on such private hospitals cannot escape their liability, where the patients are being treated inhumanely, exploited, and subjected to cruelty.”

The media report stated that the man had been working as a laborer to support himself since he lost his family in an accident in 2006. According to the statement, he fell while cleaning his residence and hurt his right knee.
