UP Rajya Sabha Election 2026 will be held on October 16 for 10 Uttar Pradesh seats. Know the election schedule, voting process and seat equation.
The Election Commission has announced the schedule for the UP Rajya Sabha Election 2026, with voting for 10 Rajya Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh set to take place on October 16. One more seat from Uttarakhand will also go to polls on the same day, taking the total number of biennial Rajya Sabha seats being contested in the two states to 11. A separate by-election will also be held for one Rajya Sabha seat in West Bengal.
The UP Rajya Sabha Election 2026 is taking place as the terms of nine sitting members from Uttar Pradesh are due to end on November 25, while one additional seat has become vacant following the resignation of Dinesh Sharma after his appointment as Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Why Are 10 Rajya Sabha Seats Going to Polls in UP?
Uttar Pradesh has 31 Rajya Sabha seats, the highest allocation among Indian states. The upcoming election covers 10 of these seats. Eight of the seats are currently held by the BJP, while the remaining two are represented by the Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party.
The outgoing members from Uttar Pradesh include BJP leaders Arun Singh, Geeta alias Chandraprabha, Neeraj Shekhar, Brijlal, BL Verma, Seema Dwivedi and Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. The list also includes Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal Yadav and BSP’s Ramji Lal Gautam. Dinesh Sharma’s seat is also part of the election following his resignation.
UP Rajya Sabha Election 2026: How Will Voting Take Place?
Unlike Lok Sabha elections, Rajya Sabha members are elected by elected members of the respective state Legislative Assembly. Therefore, the strength of political parties in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly will play a key role in determining the outcome of the 10 seats.
The Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly has a sanctioned strength of 403 members. However, vacancies in the House mean the effective number of participating legislators can be lower. The exact number of votes required for a Rajya Sabha seat depends on the number of valid votes and candidates in the contest.

The election uses proportional representation through the single transferable vote system, under which MLAs indicate their preferences among candidates.
BJP, SP and BSP: What Is the Current Equation?
The upcoming UP Rajya Sabha Election 2026 has put the spotlight on the numerical strength of the major parties in the Assembly. The BJP-led alliance has a substantial presence in the House, while the Samajwadi Party is the principal opposition party.
The Samajwadi Party has 101 MLAs according to the figures cited in current reports. This gives the party significant numbers in the Rajya Sabha contest, although the final number of seats it can secure will depend on the candidates in the fray, the voting pattern and the final arithmetic.
The BSP faces a different situation. The party currently does not have a member in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, while its sitting Rajya Sabha member Ramji Lal Gautam is among those whose term is ending. The party’s representation in the Upper House will therefore be an important part of the upcoming electoral developments.
October 16 Will Be a Key Date
According to the schedule announced by the Election Commission, polling for the 10 Uttar Pradesh seats and one Uttarakhand seat will be held on October 16, 2026. Counting will also take place on the same day.
The election process will become clearer after the nomination phase, when parties announce their candidates and the number of contestants becomes known. The final voting arithmetic will then depend on the candidates, available Assembly strength and preference votes cast by MLAs.
UP Rajya Sabha Election 2026 Before the Assembly Polls
The timing of the UP Rajya Sabha Election 2026 is significant because it comes ahead of the next Uttar Pradesh Assembly election. However, the Rajya Sabha election is a separate electoral process in which elected MLAs vote rather than the general electorate.
The contest will therefore be closely watched for its impact on the composition of Uttar Pradesh’s representation in the Rajya Sabha. The final result will be determined through the prescribed voting process once nominations, withdrawals and polling are completed.
