AAP and Congress criticized the Delhi Budget 2026 as “hollow” and unaccounted for, boycotting the Assembly session and demanding accountability from the government.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress on Tuesday strongly criticized the Delhi Budget 2026, calling it “hollow,” “triple deception,” and “unaccounted for.” Both parties skipped the budget presentation in the Delhi Assembly and staged protests, demanding full accountability from the government.
AAP Delhi chief Saurabh Bharadwaj led a protest outside the Assembly, highlighting the Palam fire tragedy in which nine members of a single family lost their lives. He alleged that the incident was a result of administrative failures, despite the government allocating ₹1 lakh crore in the Delhi Budget 2026. The party accused the government of lacking basic fire safety equipment, including functional ladders, and blamed officials for gross negligence.
“Nine people perished in Palam. If even one proper ladder had been available with the fire brigade, lives could have been saved. The entire nation mourned, yet the government led by Rekha Gupta insulted the victims in the Assembly,” said AAP leader Atishi.
The AAP also questioned the transparency and accountability of the Delhi Budget 2026, claiming that funds were mismanaged amid job cuts, halted welfare schemes, and rising costs of public projects. Bharadwaj further added that a similar budget of ₹1 lakh crore was announced last year, yet the BJP-led Delhi government has not provided a proper account of how the funds were spent.

Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) president Devender Yadav described the budget as a “triple bluff in two budgets of a triple-engine government.” Yadav stated, “This budget is a betrayal of Delhi’s past, present, and future. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta spoke at length but delivered very little.”
On the other hand, Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva defended the budget, calling the ₹1.03 lakh crore allocation the largest in Delhi’s history. He said about 74% of the expenditure comes from government revenue, with the remaining 26% clearly allocated, making it a self-reliant budget. He added that the first year of the Rekha Gupta government has been remarkable and will take Delhi to new heights.
Meanwhile, Atishi raised concerns in a letter to Speaker Vijender Gupta regarding the suspension of four AAP MLAs—Sanjiv Jha, Jarnail Singh, Som Dutt, and Kuldeep Kumar—alleging “double standards” in Assembly proceedings. The MLAs were suspended in January for disrupting the address by then-Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena.
AAP legislators boycotted the budget session on Monday and Tuesday, demanding the revocation of the suspensions. Senior party leaders claimed it was the first time in Assembly history that opposition members refused to attend the Delhi Budget 2026 session.
Responding, Speaker Vijender Gupta said the suspensions were necessary due to repeated “agitation, misbehavior, and disturbances” during the LG’s address. He expressed disappointment over the opposition defending errant members and criticized them for abstaining from proceedings despite specific advice given on March 21.
