Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday Brings Back Legends and Introduces New Faces
Marvel Studios recently revealed the star-studded cast for Avengers: Doomsday in a livestream event that lasted over five hours. The event took place in March 2025, where they gradually introduced the massive lineup of actors who will join the next major Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film. The cast includes MCU heroes, classic X-Men characters, and members of the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot, with a few exciting surprises.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled for release on May 1, 2026, with a sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, following in 2027. Among the confirmed cast are Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Anthony Mackie (Captain America), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Letitia Wright (Black Panther), Simu Liu (Shang-Chi), Danny Ramirez (The Falcon), and Winston Duke (M’Baku). These MCU mainstays will team up once again for an epic story, but they won’t be alone. Fans will also see characters from the Thunderbolts movie, such as Sebastian Stan (The Winter Soldier) and Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova), who are expected to play important roles in this upcoming chapter.
The Return of X-Men Legends
One of the biggest surprises came when Marvel announced the return of several legendary actors from the X-Men franchise. Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), James Marsden (Cyclops), and Rebecca Romijn (Mystique) will reprise their roles from the early 2000s X-Men films.

But the surprises didn’t stop there. Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler) and Kelsey Grammer (Beast), both of whom starred in later X-Men films, will also join the Avengers: Doomsday cast. This inclusion is a significant step in connecting the older X-Men films with the new MCU direction, offering fans a much-awaited reunion of sorts and paving the way for an even more expansive Marvel multiverse. This is a massive crossover event for the MCU, bringing iconic characters into the fold for the first time since Marvel regained the rights to the X-Men characters from 20th Century Fox.
A Few Unexpected Faces
In a surprising twist, Tenoch Huerta Mejía, who portrayed Namor in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, will make his return to the MCU in Avengers: Doomsday. His involvement raised questions due to some controversy surrounding him back in 2023; but Tenoch Huerta Mejía denied all allegations made against him. After stepping away from a Netflix project, he later appeared at Marvel’s Echo premiere event, suggesting that his relationship with the studio remained strong. Huerta’s return as Namor signals the continuation of his character’s story in the MCU and hints at a significant role in the upcoming film. His inclusion adds an extra layer of intrigue as Marvel further develops its multiverse storyline.

Additionally, the new Fantastic Four reboot will be represented by Pedro Pascal (Mr. Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby (Invisible Woman), Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Thing), and Joseph Quinn (Human Torch), adding fresh energy to the MCU.
The Return of Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom
In what was perhaps the biggest moment of the reveal for Avengers: Doomsday’s cast, Robert Downey Jr. made a dramatic return, but this time as the villain Doctor Doom. After saying goodbye to his role as Iron Man in Avengers: Endgame, fans wondered if Downey would ever return to the MCU.

It turns out, Marvel had a compelling plan for his comeback—one that involved him playing one of Marvel’s most dangerous and complex characters. Downey was reportedly pitched the idea by Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige, and he was instrumental in convincing the Russo Brothers, who directed Infinity War and Endgame, to return for the project. His decision to take on Doctor Doom has left fans excited to see a new side of Downey in the MCU, this time as one of its most iconic and formidable villains.
