Uttarakhand government plans to increase earthquake warning sensors to 500 under EEWS, improving early alerts and disaster preparedness across the state.
The Uttarakhand government has announced plans to expand its network of earthquake warning sensors to 500 across the state under the National Earthquake Risk Mitigation Programme. Currently, 169 sensors have been installed under the Earthquake Early Warning System (EEWS) to detect tremors and provide early alerts to residents.
Current Status of Sensors
During the ongoing budget session in Gairsain, the state government informed the Assembly that of the 169 installed sensors, 128 are fully operational while 41 remain temporarily non-functional due to power outages and connectivity issues in the state’s difficult terrain.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Subodh Uniyal explained that the earthquake warning sensors are connected to alternative power supply arrangements, but remote locations and rugged terrain sometimes cause temporary signal disruptions. “These sensors keep getting repaired, so the number of operational sensors keeps fluctuating,” he said.

Technical Support from IIT Roorkee
The government stated in a written reply that a dedicated technical team from the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee continuously monitors and maintains the network to ensure minimal downtime. The team addresses power-related issues and sensor malfunctions to keep the EEWS functioning efficiently.
Plans for Expansion
The expansion to 500 earthquake warning sensors aims to strengthen early detection capabilities across the state, particularly in high-risk and remote areas. The government hopes that a larger network will improve alert accuracy and reduce disaster-related risks.
The initiative reflects Uttarakhand’s commitment to disaster preparedness and the use of technology to safeguard citizens in a region prone to earthquakes. Officials emphasized that the expansion will also include upgraded sensors and improved connectivity to ensure timely alerts during seismic events.
