Haryana is expanding healthcare facilities with a new 100-bed block and critical care centre at Ambala Cantt Civil Hospital.

Haryana is stepping up efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and provide advanced medical treatment closer to home. As part of this initiative, Super Specialty Blocks are being emphasized to expand specialized healthcare services across the state and reduce the need for patients to travel to major cities such as Delhi for treatment.

A major development can be seen at the Civil Hospital in Ambala Cantonment, where the hospital is being expanded from 100 beds to 200 beds. Work is underway to increase capacity and provide additional facilities to patients.

₹78 Crore New 100-Bed Block Under Construction

According to Dr. Vinay Goyal, DMS of Civil Hospital Ambala Cantonment, the manpower and essential equipment required for the hospital’s upgradation have already been provided. Construction of a new building is also progressing to accommodate the additional beds.

A new 100-bed block is being constructed at an estimated cost of around ₹78 crore. The project faced some delay due to legal complications, but construction gained momentum after the re-tendering process. The building is expected to be completed soon.

The new facility will further strengthen the hospital’s capacity and support the expansion of advanced healthcare services.

Critical Care Block to Come Up at the Same Facility

A Critical Care Block approved by the Central Government is also being constructed within the same building. The facility is expected to cost around ₹16 crore and will focus on the treatment and management of patients suffering from serious and infectious diseases.

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of having adequate critical-care infrastructure to handle major health emergencies. With infections such as H1N1 also being reported, advanced critical-care facilities can play an important role in managing patients requiring intensive treatment.

The development of Super Specialty Blocks and critical-care infrastructure is expected to strengthen Haryana’s ability to provide advanced medical services at the district level.

Ambala Hospital Has Developed Into a Major Referral Centre

Dr. Goyal said that the Civil Hospital, which was once a relatively small healthcare facility, has now developed into a major referral centre. The hospital campus already provides several advanced services, including CT scan, MRI, dialysis and an interventional heart centre.

A tertiary-care cancer hospital is also operational on the campus. Patients can access specialist services such as urology, plastic surgery, radiation oncology and onco-surgery.

The availability of these facilities is helping expand access to specialized treatment for people in Ambala and surrounding areas.

Advanced Laboratory and Blood Bank Facilities Available

The hospital also has a district-level advanced laboratory and a blood bank equipped with blood-component preparation facilities. This infrastructure is expected to further improve diagnostic and emergency-care services.

Meanwhile, a proposal for a PET scan centre is reportedly in its final stage. Once the necessary processes are completed, construction of the centre is expected to begin.

With the addition of such facilities, the hospital is gradually moving towards a more comprehensive healthcare model, where patients can access multiple diagnostic and specialist services at one location.

Focus on Affordable Healthcare

According to the hospital administration, several healthcare services available at the facility are being provided either free of cost or at highly subsidized rates. This can provide significant relief to patients, particularly those who may otherwise face high expenses at private hospitals.

The expansion of Super Specialty Blocks and specialized medical infrastructure is part of the broader effort to improve healthcare delivery in Haryana.

Will Patients Need to Travel to Delhi Less Often?

The expansion of specialist services at district-level hospitals could reduce the dependence of patients on healthcare facilities in Delhi and other major cities. However, referrals will continue to depend on the severity of a patient’s condition and the type of treatment required.
