The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has taken a major leap forward in modernizing India’s statistical ecosystem with the launch of a newly upgraded Microdata Portal during a recent conference of State Government Ministers. This revamped platform significantly improves data accessibility, enhances user experience, and integrates cutting-edge technologies into the country’s official statistical framework. Acting as a centralized hub for a vast collection of data from national surveys and economic censuses, the portal addresses previous technological constraints. Built in collaboration with the World Bank Technology Team, it uses a modern, scalable tech stack that adheres to top-tier security protocols and supports a responsive design and streamlined data access. The portal is available at https://microdata.gov.in.
Additionally, MoSPI unveiled the website of the National Statistical System Training Academy (NSSTA), aimed at centralizing and simplifying access to information related to the ministry’s capacity-building programs. This site can be accessed at www.nssta.gov.in. Both the portal and website were developed internally by the ministry’s Data Informatics & Innovation Division.
Further highlighting its commitment to innovation, MoSPI introduced a Proof of Concept (PoC) for an AI/ML-powered classification tool to simplify the application of the National Industrial Classification (NIC) in official statistics. Using natural language processing, the tool allows users to input descriptive queries and receive the top five relevant NIC codes. This tool, developed from a recent hackathon initiative, reduces manual workload and boosts the efficiency of field enumerators—resulting in more accurate data collection and improved policy planning.
Together, these initiatives reflect MoSPI’s dedication to harnessing technological advancements to strengthen the national statistical system and promote a more data-informed approach to governance—paving the way for a more progressive and well-planned Viksit Bharat.
