Nora Fatehi fatwa issued in UP over controversial song Sarke Chunar Teri Sarke; religious body calls visuals vulgar, Union govt bans track.
In a major controversy, a Nora Fatehi fatwa has been issued in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, over her performance in the song Sarke Chunar Teri Sarke from the Kannada film KD: The Devil. The song, featuring Nora Fatehi alongside Sanjay Dutt, has sparked widespread criticism for lyrics and visuals deemed offensive by religious authorities.
The Nora Fatehi fatwa was issued by the Muslim Personal Darul Ifta in Aligarh, with Chief Mufti Maulana Ebrahim Hussain calling the song “explicit and vulgar.” According to the religious body, the song’s visuals and content are haram and constitute a gunah-e-kabira (grave sin). The fatwa advises against participating in or promoting such material, claiming it goes against Islamic teachings.
Following the controversy, the Union government also banned the song. Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed in the Lok Sabha that Sarke Chunar Teri Sarke has been removed from circulation after complaints about its objectionable lyrics and visuals.

Nora Fatehi responded to the backlash in a detailed Instagram video, clarifying her limited involvement. She said that when she shot the song three years ago, she was unaware of the controversial Hindi translation. “I didn’t understand Kannada, and I relied on the team’s explanation. I had no role in the Hindi lyrics,” she said. Despite this, Nora acknowledged that she realized the Hindi lyrics could cause trouble during the song’s launch.
The controversy around the Nora Fatehi fatwa has intensified discussions on artistic freedom and cultural sensitivities. While Nora Fatehi remains a popular performer, the fatwa highlights the delicate balance between creative expression and religious sentiments.
KD: The Devil, starring Dhruva Sarja, Sanjay Dutt, Shilpa Shetty Kundra, Ramesh Aravind, Reeshma Nanaiah, and V Ravichandran, is set to release on April 30. With the Nora Fatehi fatwa making headlines, the song controversy has already impacted the film’s promotional campaign.
The Nora Fatehi fatwa controversy underlines the challenges faced by actors in cross-linguistic remakes and adaptations, especially when content is translated into Hindi from regional languages. Fans and critics alike are closely watching how this controversy will affect the film’s reception at the box office.
