CHANDIGARH, March 27, 2026 — Punjab has emerged as a national leader in public healthcare delivery. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, Punjab’s Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojna (MMSY) has achieved unprecedented scale, enrolled over 30.51 lakh families and approved INR 292 crore in free treatments within just 90 days of its launch.
Rapid Implementation and Financial Relief
During a press conference at Punjab Bhawan, Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Balbir Singh highlighted the scheme’s transformative impact since its rollout on January 8, 2026. The initiative has effectively bridged the gap between high-end medical costs and the common man.
Key Performance Metrics (Jan – March 2026):
- Total Families Enrolled: 30,51,325
- Treatment Authorizations: 1,77,097
- Total Approved Treatment Value: INR 292 Crore
- Claims Settled: 71,000
- Disbursements to Hospitals: INR 60 Crore
“By any parameter—registrations, families covered, or patients treated—Punjab is now number one in the country,” stated Dr. Balbir Singh. “When the government spends ₹292 crore on healthcare, that is money staying directly in the pockets of our citizens.”
Ensuring Hospital Trust: New Time-Bound Payment Framework
To maintain a robust healthcare ecosystem, the Bhagwant Mann government has introduced a transparent, time-bound payment mechanism for empanelled hospitals. This move ensures that healthcare providers remain motivated to offer high-quality care without financial bottlenecks.
Effective April 1, 2026, the new payment cycle includes:
- Claims up to INR 1 Lakh: Settled within 15 days.
- Claims above INR 1 Lakh: Cleared within 7 days of submission.
- Disputed Claims: Resolution and verification completed within 30 days.
- Zero Dues Policy: All pending dues up to March 31 will be cleared by April 15, 2026.
Impact Across Generations: From Infants to Super-Seniors
The Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojna is proving its versatility by covering complex surgeries and chronic illnesses. Dr. Balbir Singh shared heartening success stories that underscore the scheme’s reach:
Age Inclusivity: Beneficiaries range from a one-year-old infant to a 99-year-old grandmother receiving life-saving cancer treatment.
Specialized Care: The scheme has covered over 100 types of cardiac diseases.
Critical Success: A high-risk surgery for a ruptured sinus was successfully performed at Patiala Medical College, fully funded by the yojna.
Seamless Universal Coverage
The State Health Agency, in collaboration with United India Insurance, is streamlining the delivery process to ensure “paperless and cashless” treatment. The Punjab government’s commitment to universal health coverage is setting a new standard for social welfare, proving that scale and speed can go hand-in-hand with quality medical care.
