Punjab government launches unified syllabus for Anganwadi, primary, and playway schools, emphasizing play-based learning. 1,000 modern centers to ensure holistic child development.
In a major step toward improving early childhood education, the Punjab government has announced that children in Anganwadi centers, primary schools, and playway schools will now follow a unified syllabus. The new approach emphasizes learning through play rather than traditional book-based methods, aiming to foster holistic development among young learners.
Cabinet Minister Baljit Kaur shared details of the initiative during a press conference in Chandigarh. She highlighted that the government plans to establish 1,000 modern Anganwadi centers across the state, equipped with child-friendly classrooms, recreational spaces, and kitchens, to ensure a safe and stimulating learning environment.

Play-Based Learning to Promote Cognitive Development
Baljit Kaur emphasized that 90% of a child’s brain development occurs before the age of five. “Our goal is to provide the right environment for children to grow and learn naturally,” she said. “Instead of burdening them with books, we will focus on play-based education. The syllabus is being standardized, and Anganwadi staff training has already begun and will be completed by February.”
The government has also launched Mission Aarambh, involving parents of children attending Anganwadis. Through regular guidance and communication, parents are being educated on effective ways to support their children’s learning at home. Early feedback suggests the initiative is already showing positive results.
1,000 Anganwadi Centers to Ensure Inclusive Education
Out of the 1,000 planned centers, 700 have already been completed. These centers feature spacious classrooms, child-friendly furniture, and wall paintings designed to create an engaging learning environment. The goal is to allow children to attend classes comfortably while learning through activities, fostering both cognitive and social skills.
The unified syllabus and play-based approach are expected to ensure equitable development opportunities for all children in Punjab, preparing them for future academic and personal success.
This initiative is part of Punjab’s larger vision to modernize early childhood education and make it accessible, enjoyable, and effective for every child in the state.
