Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene has pulled no punches in his assessment of his team’s recent defeat, admitting that the five-time champions were completely outclassed by a clinical display of power hitting. In a rain-curtailed IPL 2026 clash in Guwahati, Mahela Jayawardene conceded that the Mumbai Indians were simply “blown away” by the Sooryavanshi and Jaiswal magic that powered the Rajasthan Royals to a dominant victory.
The Opening Onslaught
The match, reduced to 11 overs a side due to heavy rain at the ACA Stadium, became a sprint rather than a marathon. Choosing to bowl first, MI hoped to use the damp conditions to their advantage. However, Rajasthan’s opening duo of Yashasvi Jaiswal and the teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi had other plans.
The pair dismantled the MI bowling attack from the first delivery. Yashasvi Jaiswal played a masterclass in aggressive T20 batting, smashing an unbeaten 77 off just 32 balls. On the other end, 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi proved why he is the talk of the tournament, bludgeoning 39 runs off a mere 14 balls, including five massive sixes. Together, they stitched together a blazing 80-run partnership in the first five overs, leaving the Mumbai Indians bowlers—including the seasoned Jasprit Bumrah—scrambling for answers.

Mahela’s Honest Admission
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Mahela Jayawardene was candid about his team’s failure to execute their game plan.
“We had some plans, but we didn’t execute them the way we wanted. The margins are very small in a rain-curtailed game. These guys are batting really well, and we knew the dangers. We missed our lengths, we missed our lines, and they played really, really well,” Jayawardene said.
He specifically noted the “magic” produced by the RR openers, acknowledging that even Jasprit Bumrah struggled to find his rhythm against the relentless assault. “Bumrah probably missed the length by a little bit, and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was ready for it. He really took our bowlers down,” Mahela added.
A Steep Mountain to Climb
Chasing a daunting target of 151 in just 11 overs, the Mumbai Indians never managed to find their groove. The pressure of the scoreboard, combined with the momentum generated by the Sooryavanshi and Jaiswal magic, proved too much. Despite minor contributions from Naman Dhir and Sherfane Rutherford, MI crumbled to 123/9, losing by 27 runs.
This loss marks MI’s second defeat in three games this season. While the coach insisted that the total was “chasable” with the right partnerships, he admitted that the lack of momentum at the top of the order was the final nail in the coffin.
